Grono onboarding screen after Boostra CRO audit
“People were not rejecting the platform — they were arriving in an empty room with no map. Boostra showed us the map.”

Challenge

Grono is a community platform where people discover and join interest-based groups — local networks, hobby circles, and professional communities. Sign-up conversion was not the problem; 30-day activation was. A member who had not joined a group or posted within 30 days was unlikely to return, and too many new accounts stalled before reaching that first action.

After completing registration, new members arrived at a blank feed. The platform had the community infrastructure to fill it, but the empty state gave no direction: no suggested groups, no example of what engagement looked like, and no starting point tied to the interests the member had stated during sign-up. The first prompt the platform showed was 'Invite your contacts' — a sharing ask before the member had experienced any value.

Approach

Boostra's onboarding scan flagged the empty state as the highest drop-off point in the activation path. The action plan identified three changes: use interest data collected at registration to pre-populate the first feed with community suggestions, delay the contact-invite prompt until after a member's first group join, and add a visible 'Start a conversation' template to lower the posting barrier.

The team introduced a lightweight interest-selection step at the end of registration — three categories, skippable. First-session feeds were populated with three to five suggested communities matching those interests. The 'Invite contacts' screen moved to post-first-join, and a posting template appeared inside the first community a member visited.

Results

30-day member activation rose 17.4%, first-week churn fell 13.2%, and the share of new members making a first group post within seven days improved 9.6%. Members were not disinterested — they needed a starting point, and the platform was not providing one.

Results are from Grono's Boostra analysis on the registration-to-activation path. Outcomes are specific to this platform and cohort; community products with different onboarding designs will see different numbers.
