Tapmy merchant onboarding after Boostra CRO audit
“Merchants understood tap-to-pay. They did not know how many steps were left in setup. We fixed the step indicator, not the idea — and the numbers moved.”

Challenge

Tapmy lets merchants accept card payments using only a smartphone — no hardware terminal required. The product is technically simple but setup requires KYC identity verification and bank-account linking before the first real transaction can be processed. A large share of new merchants who downloaded the app abandoned before completing those two steps.

Exit analytics showed the steepest drop at the KYC screen. It presented a document upload with no indication of how many verification steps remained, no explanation of why the information was required, and no estimated completion time. Once past KYC, merchants reached a 'first test transaction' prompt that used the phrase 'initiate an NFC payment' — terminology that did not match how a café owner or market trader thought about tapping a card.

Approach

Boostra's onboarding scan flagged three friction points: the absence of a step counter on the KYC screen, insufficient context explaining why identity verification was needed before processing payments, and technical language on the first-transaction prompt that created uncertainty rather than confidence.

The team added a progress indicator ('Step 2 of 3 · Identity verification') to the KYC screen, paired with a single-line explanation: 'Required by financial regulations to protect your payments.' The mid-onboarding headline was rewritten from 'Tapmy setup' to 'Accept your first card payment today — no hardware needed.' The test-transaction prompt changed from 'Initiate an NFC payment' to 'Tap any card to activate.'

Results

First-transaction completion rose 14.6%, onboarding abandonment fell 11.3%, and KYC-step drop-off improved 8.2% in the weeks following the changes. The setup process had not changed in complexity — merchants now understood what they were completing and why.

Results are from Tapmy's Boostra analysis on the merchant onboarding flow. Improvements reflect this specific flow; other payment onboarding processes with different regulatory requirements will differ.
